Dearborn County Priest Transition 2023- For Website and External Use.jpg

PLEASE PRAY~ Prayer for Dearborn County During this transition

Almighty God, who by Your Son Jesus Christ, the eternal high priest, desired to save the world and establish Your Church.  With hearts full of gratitude, we thank you for the priestly ministry of Fr. Mahan; for his authentic celebration of the sacraments, faith-filled teaching and catechesis and his compassionate heart.  Continue to bless him with perseverance and zeal as he begins his work for the entire Church in America.

We know that you love us and have a plan for our good, so we ask that You bless us with a holy and zealous priest for Dearborn County. That he may diligently preach Your Holy Word, beautifully celebrate the sacraments, and lead us all closer to You and Your Heart.  Give him supernatural strength as he will carry the burdens of many.

And Lord, bless us, your people with a spirit of patience, understanding and welcome as we enter this period of transition.

We ask this with a deep and abiding trust and confidence in Your holy will, and we ask all of this through the intercession of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and in the name of Jesus who died, was buried in a tomb, rose from the grave, dwells in our tabernacles, and lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen

Dearborn County Catholics,

As many of you know, Fr. Mahan has been assisting at the Office of the Catechism of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) for many years. Fr Mahan has worked with publishers of catechetical texts, helping them to produce texts that are accurate and complete in presenting the teachings of our Catholic faith. Fr Mahan has also spoken at and organized leadership conferences and has become an important part of the organization.

In mid-January, Fr. Mahan received notice that at the request of the USCCB, Archbishop Thompson had agreed to release him from parish responsibilities at All Saints, St Lawrence, St Mary, and St Teresa effective July 1, 2023. Fr. Mahan will assume the responsibility of Director of the Institute from the USCCB offices in Washington, DC.

While we were not prepared for this announcement, we believe this is God’s plan and will accept it. This is a tremendous opportunity for Fr. Mahan to share his gifts with parishes throughout the entire country.

Fr. Mahan arrived in Dearborn County in July 2021 with intentions of remaining here for many years. He has very much enjoyed serving our parishes and the fruits of his labor are evident in us all.

We are grateful to have received this information now to allow for planning and a smoother transition. Again, Fr Mahan will remain in Dearborn County through June.

Enclosed with this announcement you will find words of encouragement from Fr Eric Johnson, Vicar for Clergy affirming Archdiocesan support to us during this transition.
Please spend time over the next several months in prayer giving thanks for Fr Mahan’s service and for his future assignment.
